Clinical Pharmacists
Clinical pharmacists work as part of the general practice team to improve value and outcomes from medicines and consult with and treat patients directly. This includes providing extra help to manage long-term conditions, advice for those on multiple medicines and better access to health checks. Many Clinical Pharmacists can prescribe medicines, but those who can’t work closely with your GP, to ensure the medicines you are prescribed are safe and working well for you.
Advanced Nurse Practitioners
Nurse Practitioners are trained specialist nurses. They have undertaken additional medical education to provide advanced nursing care and to prescribe medication. Nurse Practitioners can provide treatment and advice for many problems for which you may have seen a doctor for in the past. The nurse practitioners can assess and examine you, make diagnosis and provide advice and treatment including a prescription if required. They can make referrals to hospital doctors or healthcare professionals and admit patients into hospital when necessary.
Paramedic Practitioners
Paramedics Practitioners work closely with advanced practitioners and GPs to assess and monitor acute and chronic ailments, illnesses, and injuries.
Physician Associates
Physician Associates (PAs) are trained to work within a defined scope of practice and limits of competence to support the Doctors at the practice. They can carry out lots of duties such as taking medical history, physical examinations, seeing patients with long term conditions, formulating differential diagnosis and management plans, provide health promotion and disease prevention advice.
First Contact Physiotherapists
First Contact Physiotherapists is a new model evolving in the UK. It involves placing physiotherapists directly into GP practices and to treat patients who come into clinic with musculoskeletal problems. Patients with MSK conditions can bypass the appointment with a GP and go straight to get help with a specialist physiotherapist.

Mental Health Practitioner
Mental Health Practitioners contribute to the NHS Long Term Plan to support adults and older adults with severe mental illnesses to live well in their communities. Mental Health Practitioners are based within GP surgeries or neighbourhood settings, to support people with complex mental health needs and act as a ‘bridge’ between primary are and specialist mental health services.
Children & Young Person’s Mental Health Practitioner
Children and young people’s wellbeing practitioners (CWPs) assess and support children and young people with mental health problems, improving their access to therapies.
Associate Psychological Practitioner
The APPs are working in our primary care network (PCN). They are employed by Lancashire and South Cumbria Foundation Trust (LSCFT). They work across the local PCN working on mental health promotion and prevention. Their role is to help people who are struggling with mental health. The idea is to intervene when there are early signs of mental health deterioration to try and prevent worse mental health difficulties in the future.

Social Prescribers
Social prescribing is a key component of Universal Personalised Care. It is an approach that connects people to activities, groups, and services in their community to meet the practical, social, and emotional needs that affect their health and wellbeing.
Our social prescribers can provide support for any non-medical related problems. Patients can self-refer via reception.

Training Practice
Issa Medical is an approved training practice, recognised for both undergraduate and post graduate medical training. Being approved as a training practice gives recognition of the quality of care we provide as well as the range of educational opportunities available for learners.
Trainers are examined independently to ensure that they have sufficient knowledge of practice and of education, skills appropriate to one-to-one teaching, educational management, and attitudes supportive of learning.
Trainees
A GP Registrar is a qualified doctor who has decided to embark on a career in general practice, much like a surgeon or physician in the hospital. Part of their training involves them spending a total of 18 months working at a teaching practice. This is usually divided into a 6 month and 12 month attachment. We will usually have one GP Registrar who joins us to complete the final part of their training.
We also provide placements for 5th year medical students from Manchester University for periods of 8 weeks.
A Foundation Doctor (FY1 or FY2) is a Doctor who has just graduated medical school and are placed with us for 4 months to gain an overview of General Practice.
How this will affect you
Sometimes you will be seen by the GP Registrar or FY2 instead of (or as well as) your own GP. In the beginning, an appointment with the GP Registrar / FY2 may take longer than most GP appointments, we do appreciate your patience during these longer appointments.
All medical students and trainees have signed to and are obliged to offer you the same professional and confidential care as all other clinicians available in the surgery.
